Statement from Ambassador Katherine Tai in Support of Timor-Leste’s Progress Toward Accession to the World Trade Organization

October 11, 2023

“The United States is pleased to announce the completion of bilateral market access negotiations with Timor-Leste, as part of Timor-Leste’s efforts to accede to the World Trade Organization. Timor-Leste applied for WTO accession in 2016 and began actively working toward this goal in 2020.  Timor-Leste’s strong commitment to advance negotiations enabled significant progress within the last two years, including the conclusion of our bilateral agreement.

“The United States looks forward to working with Timor-Leste and other WTO Members as Timor-Leste strives to advance and complete its accession.  In parallel to the WTO accession process, Timor-Leste is also engaged in separate negotiations toward acceding to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.”
